Sihanoukville is part of Cambodia’s west coastline halfway between Thailand and Vietnam. It can be both reached from Siem Riep and its capital City Phnom Penh. It is the leading beach town destination in Cambodia. Sihanoukville has come a long way from being a port city in the late 1950′s although it is the most urbanized city in all Cambodia.

Today the place is more of a beach town than a port town catering to both foreign and local tourist who comes to spend their time in the white sand beaches. There is several water activities that you can do like scuba diving, snorkeling, boating or simply sunbathing. Despite the increase number of tourist in the place still they are able to preserve the beauty of its beaches and the pace of life in Sihanoukville remains to be calm and peaceful, that is one thing that attracts most tourists.

Getting to Sihanoukville

  • From Thailand: A 45 minute travel by air to Phnom Penh from Bangkok then another three to four hours land trip to Sihanoukville.
  • From Vietnam: Just fly from Saigon or Hanoi to Phnom Penh and then about four hours ride to Sihanoukville.

It would be a great combination to get a package tour that includes the three places of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

Of course the main attraction in Sihanoukville is the beach and its relaxed pace of life. Developments are quite centered then in their beaches and over a short period of time you can find lots of beach hotels in the area. You can find a variety of accommodation that ranges from five star hotels to mid range hotel in town and budget guesthouses.

Choices for food are vast with fresh sea food on top of the list. They are caught daily and serve in a particular specialty which includes crabs, prawns and ocean fish. With the increase flow of foreign visitors in the area a much westernized restaurants have open offering International cuisine like German, Indian, Italian, Australian, British and more.

Excitement doesn’t stop when the sun goes down for at night Sihanoukville has a lot to offer. Fine dining in one of the best restaurants they have and plenty of bars, some of it stayed open until the early hours especially the ones in the Weather Station Hill area.

Despite of the developments, Sihanoukville remained Cambodia’s best, still unspoiled and has retains its unique Cambodian appeal and hospitality. It’s relaxed pace of life certainly appeals to most tourists making them want to comeback to the place again and again. It has its own magic which you just can’t resist.

So plan your trip now, you can always plan a trip to multiple places like the most popular itineraries which begins a visit in Bangkok Thailand then go to Siem Riep and you can visit some place while there and then go on to Phnom Penh either by air, land or by boat. And then the last would be a few days at the beach in Sihanoukville. You don’t get to see one place but a whole lot more. It would be an experience hard to forget.
