How to go to Sagada Mountain Province and what to See

Sagada mountain province is often described as a remote paradise on earth. Its remote and exotic location makes it an ideal tourist haven for both local and foreign visitors. Sagada is a town of Mountain Province that is quite near from the province capital city, Bontoc. Situated 170.87 miles north of Manila and just 62 miles from Baguio. Most tourists who visit Baguio also make a side trip to Sagada although most tourists who need more rest find themselves in Sagada.

The locals of Sagada are natives called Igorots. There dialect is Kankana-ey but most locals do speak English. Agriculture is their main source of income. Their common crops production of Cabbage, Carrots and potatoes are a plenty. Most rice planted is mainly for household consumption only. Today Sagada is earning significantly from their tourism industry too.

There are three main routes to reach Sagada from Manila. The first route is Manila-Baguio-Sagada route often called as Bag-Sagada route. The second is Manila-Bontoc-Sagada or the Bon-Sagada route and the last is the Manila-Banaue-Bontoc-Sagada route or Babon-Sagada.

The fastest route that can take visitors to Sagada is the Bon-Sagada route or the Manila-Bontoc-Sagada route. Travel time is 12-13 hours with cutting trip at Bontoc. The other two routes may take 13-14 hours of travel. Please take note that this travel time does not include waiting time between transfers. Air-conditioned buses are available for the three routes and the best road condition is with the Bag-Sagada route.

The cheapest route to Sagada is the Babon-Sagada route (Manila-Banaue-Bontoc-Sagada). The fare usually cost around $14 and the other routes cost about $15. All of these trips are on daily schedule although the route through Baguio is more frequent like very hour or every other hour. For sightseeing purposes the route through Baguio is the most recommended since you can stop at Baguio and spend a couple of days there before finally going to Sagada.

Sagada is full of natural and human made attractions which lure lots of tourist to this destination. Among the most popular man made attractions in Sagada are the Rice Terraces and the Hanging Coffins. The Rice Terraces known as the eight wonder of the world is carved out by the natives – the Igorots ancestors. It is a magnificent sight to behold.

Another human made attraction are the Sagada hanging coffins, it is a unique resting place that is in the face of limestone cliffs. It is probably the only place in the Philippines that you see this intriguing burial place. Other places to see are Sumaging Cave, Bomod-ok Falls, Mission Compound, Lake Danum, Underground River, Bokong Waterfalls and many more.

Indeed it is the best place to stay when you want to escape from the busy and stressful life in the city. It is one way of escaping the pollution, heat and noise of urban places. Truly you will find solace and peace in this wonderful place of Sagada mountain province. With its pleasant cool climate, it is indeed ideal for summer vacations. Sagada mountain province is the best alternative if Baguio is too crowded during summer.
