Prague Travel Guide

Enjoy this short Prague Travel Guide. The city of Prague is anything but a quaint old capital city tucked away somewhere in old Eastern Europe. On our first visit to Prague, we boarded a bus from the airport that led us, through the subway, right to the heart of the city. It was throbbing with activity on a lovely weekend afternoon. But we did not just want to be part of the bustling crowd, all we wanted was to get away and go to an opera.

Prague and all of Czech Republic amalgamated with the European Union and tourists have happily accepted this graceful old capital. Prague is the one city in Europe that is known to have retained all of its pristine elegance, not having morphed with time. It is also the only Central European capital to have fortunately escaped the ravages of the two World Wars.

The Old Town Square is the perfect place to begin your tour of the city once you have got a feel of the city crowd. It served as a market square and has been the focal point of all activities for centuries. On one side of it is the Old Town Hall while a 15th century astronomical clock stands tall over the Square, making its presence felt with the undeniable strike every hour.

On the other side stands the stately 14th century Tyn Church while impressive pastel Art Nouveau buildings dominating the rest of the skyline.

This Square is a top draw among tourists. Here there are outdoor cafes while small group of musicians on the corners keep you entertained, all for a tip. Then there are horse-drawn buggies that provide you with an old world charm while there also are classic cars to take you around the city. All in all, a place with the right combination for you to take off on a city-tour.

On one side of the Old Town Hall is the Karlova Street, an old narrow street with many twists and turns that weaves its way through Prague to reach the Charles Bridge. The seemingly endless stream of tourists will make sure you keep moving forward. However, always keep a protective hand covering the pocket that holds your wallet. In fact, it’s a good idea if you take extra care of your valuables by donning a money belt. Without having to worry about the safekeeping of your money, you can allow yourself to move freely, soaking in the warm hospitality of the place.

The Charles Bridge is a place where you can spend hours wallowing in the ambience. There are wonderful statues that line both sides of the bridge. Though these are copies of statues housed in the National Museum, they definitely are worth exploring. There are plenty of vendors hawking almost anything that you might want while musicians ensure there is not a single dull moment for you. They try to spread out so that what you get to savor is music that is soothing to your ears and never a jarring note. Benches lining the street allow you to rest for a while and offer a splendid view of the Prague Castle.

Make sure you cross the bridge and let yourself into the Little Quarter. There are a lot of quaint palaces, ancient houses and surely churches within this quarter. The street winds its way uphill to the Castle, which you will surely love exploring though there is no need to be too obsessed on it. For as per castle standards, the rooms are built on rather simple lines.

The promenade doubles up as a viewer’s delight as it provides a splendid view of the city; so splendid that you’ll know why the city is also sometimes referred to as the “Golden City of 100 Spires”

After the castle, time permitting, you can next go and take a look at the Jewish Quarter and the New Town.

There are a lot of B&Bs and restaurants that dot the city. The old city center can very well be explored on foot. Or you can grab a beer and laze by the riverside. Then in the evening, you can treat yourself to a concert. And enjoy being one more tourist who has discovered the wonderful Prague tourist attractions.
